Is Dry Shampoo Enough to Clean Your Hair?

For some people, hair washing can truly be a chore. If you have longer hair, curly hair, or low porosity hair, then you’ll know the struggle of taking two hours or more to wash, detangle, and dry your hair. That amount of time is no joke! You could have watched a movie, done some errands, taken a nap, or even get some extra work done.
For those who want to prolong the time before you need to wash your hair, dry shampoo is the answer! This will save you from having to wash your hair so often and extend the life of your hairstyles. But don’t get the wrong idea! It also has its limitations. Here’s what dry shampoo can do for you and what it can’t.
What it can do
Absorb excess oil
The very reason dry shampoo exists! In the olden days, people used cornstarch and even flour to absorb the excess oils from their hair and scalp. These days, the formula has been perfected to refresh the scalp and roots by absorbing oils and making it smell good at that!
Volumize
Dry shampoo is also often used to add some volume to the roots. Oftentimes, oil can weigh hair down and make it look limp and flat. This is true especially for oilier hair types such as straight and wavy hair. Dry shampoo is a great way to balance out your style by giving you a bump of extra volume at the roots.
Extend time between washes
Hair washing days usually come when there’s a bit too much dirt or oil in the hair. Dirt typically doesn’t build up too quickly on the scalp and hair, so oil is the main reason a lot of people wash their hair. When your hair is getting a little too greasy, you don’t have to wash it right away. Instead, apply some dry shampoo and it will give your roots an instant refresher.
Save you from frequent heat styling
Washing your hair often means redoing your heat styling. Dry shampoo saves your style by letting you go longer between wash days. This means less damage and dryness for your hair.
What It Can’t Do
Clean your hair
Even though it’s called dry “shampoo” it doesn’t function the same way as a normal shampoo you would use in the shower. It doesn’t really cleanse your hair and scalp of impurities. It only temporarily absorbs oil and adds even more buildup to your hair. Make sure to still cleanse your hair and scalp with a purifying shampoo to get rid of product buildup.
Give you the nourishment that your hair needs
Dry shampoo is mostly for convenience and aesthetics. While some formulas may have beneficial properties, dry shampoo can’t provide the nourishment your hair needs. Use a good, nourishing shampoo, deep conditioner, hair oil, hair masks, and treatments to give your hair the love it deserves.
Keep your hair fresh for a long time
Dry shampoo can handle freshening up your hair a day or two longer but anything longer than that and it doesn’t really look or feel good anymore. It will build up too much on the hair, it will start to struggle to absorb all the oil, and you’ll feel itchy. Don’t rely on dry shampoo for too long to keep your hair fresh.
